1st Grade - March 2024

Another month has come and gone! We had a great time this month. We started a new set of geode books and have been reading all about the wind. We’ve learned how the wind moves seeds, creates statues called yardangs, helps birds fly, helps boats sail, and so much more! We enjoyed reading the books and drawing pictures of what we learned.

In Math, we’ve continued working with base ten blocks and are now adding even bigger numbers. To solve problems like 52 + 34, we draw pictures and then count it all up.

In Social Studies, we finished learning about how we can protect the Earth that God created and have now moved on to learning about our country. We studied Native Americans, Christopher Columbus, and even listened to the song Yankee Doodle. We also learned about important national symbols like the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and the bald eagle.

In Science, we’ve been learning about our Earth and the amazing things God created like soil, rocks, different types of land, plants, and animals. Now, we’re focusing on temperature. We even did a fun activity where we tracked the temperature and weather for a week.

In Art, we started learning about patterns. We first explored different types of lines, such as thin lines, thick lines, curvy lines, and straight lines. Then we practiced drawing patterns using these lines. After practicing, we created colorful patterned pets and made a patterned lion using five different patterns for the lion's face and body. Be sure to check them out on our bulletin board!

To end the month, we went on a field trip to the Ames Ice Arena, where we went ice skating with the 5th-8th graders. It was a fantastic time!
