1st Grade - October 2024

What another amazing month at school! We have been learning and exploring so much.

For reading, we have been reading about how books can change lives. We have just finished reading about mobile libraries and the different ways they move. We also read about people who live in remote villages and how they are able to get books. Now we are reading books about animals and how we can still learn from these books.

For math, we have been learning about adding and subtracting and using different strategies. We have been adding using doubles, near doubles, and making a ten.

For science we are learning about animals and the places that they live. God has created so many amazing animals and habitats that we get to learn about. We have also learned how the animals can protect themselves from predators.

For social studies, we are learning about the community we live in. We have talked about communities that are big and that are small. We also learned about the people in our community and the different jobs they do to help the community.

For writing, we have been working hard on using our best handwriting in our work. We have been learning about what a sentence needs and the different words we use in sentences like nouns and verbs. We have 2 journals that we get to write in. The first journal is our weekly journal where we write about a specific topic every week. We have written about our favorite animals, what we do on the weekends, and about the books we are reading. Then in our monthly journal, we have written about our favorite part of school so far and what we love about fall!

For field trips, we went to Iowa State to visit the Insect Zoo. We got to learn about the different types of insects and even got to hold them! Then we also took a trip to the Blank Park Zoo and got to see all the different types of animals.
