2nd Grade - March 2024

In Phonics, we’re focusing on reading for fluency, identifying topic sentences, and finding supporting facts in passages. We’ve been diagramming closed, v-e, open, r-controlled, “D” syllables, and exceptions to syllable types, which keeps us on our toes. One of our favorite yet challenging group activities is playing our word wall word search—it’s a totally addictive group effort!

In Math, we’ve been working on standard forms, word forms, expanded forms, place value up to the thousands, skip counting by ones, twos, fives, tens, and hundreds, as well as recognizing less than, greater than, and equal to. For many of us, math is one of our favorite subjects.

We recently ventured to Des Moines for two exciting educational adventures. Our first stop was the State Historical Museum, where we were greeted by a life-size replica of a woolly mammoth. We enjoyed exploring Iowa’s rich history and marveling at the many unique artifacts that reinforced what we’ve learned and sparked our curiosity in new subjects.

Next, we visited our State Capitol. Wow—what an amazing experience! We were in awe of the size and beauty of the building. Our tour guide was very informative, answering all our questions and teaching us about the building and our state government. We had the chance to view both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and even got to chat briefly with Senator Jesse Green. We were fascinated to hear about the fire and how students from a nearby high school helped save the furniture and books in the Capitol. The elaborate paintings, mosaics, murals, marble, wood carvings, and 23-karat gold leaf throughout the building left us in awe.

We also recently explored Boone County by interviewing professionals from various fields, uncovering the passion and dedication behind each job. Our 2nd graders got a firsthand look at what it takes to make our community thrive. Each interview provided an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and discover the many paths their futures could take as God leads them.

We are very grateful to Mrs. Rachel Bornhoft, Mrs. Madison Elsberry, Mrs. Hanna Hanson, Mrs. Alysha Haupert, Mr. Gary Haupert, Mrs. Raylene O’Tool, and Mrs. Sue Zabilla for making this eye-opening experience possible. A huge thank you also goes out to the 15 professionals in Boone who opened their doors and lives to our 2nd graders. Their time, knowledge, and encouragement have made a lasting impact.

Thank you, God, for blessing our community with people so willing to serve others.
