4th Grade - March 2024

Math - Students are learning about fractions. Whether represented in diagrams, placed on number lines, or found in fractional charts, we are deepening our understanding of what fractions represent and how they compare to one another. We have learned to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. We continue to solidify our basic math facts and are currently working on mastering the 9’s!

Science - We recently completed a geology unit. Students can now name the main components of the Earth’s layers and identify different types of rocks—igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. We also learned that some minerals, like salt and calcium, are important to our health. We explored the ongoing rock cycle and learned about weathering, erosion, and land formations.

Art - Students created lead pencil sketches with the theme “1 cross + 3 nails = 4given,” which are now on display outside the 4th-grade classroom.

Reading - We have begun a new unit on “heroes” in our textbook, starting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our focus is on understanding cause and effect while also expanding our vocabularies with new words. Many of us are reading books outside of school in preparation for our next project presentation day.

Language Arts - We are practicing reading short passages, creating keyword outlines, and rewriting the passages using strong verbs and adjectives. It’s stupendous! We’re also continuing to add to our personal narratives during free time—some of them are several pages long!

Social Studies - We finished our unit on the Southeast region and are now beginning to learn about the people, landforms, climate, and resources of the Northeast region.
